Chapter 25

Lacey

Yep, shouldn’t have asked; my heart rate jumped again.

“You’ve got the wrong girl. I’m not ready to die, I’m afraid.” I stood tall and smiled because at that moment my voice sounded so like my poor, deceased mum’s.

But… I’m not ready to die.

That surprised me.

Damn, I’m not. Why did it take me until this moment to realise?

“You chose the Dark King.” He smiled, not a big, beaming smile that would break his icy stare. His was a sneer that told me so much more.

Was the Dark King the man in my dreams?

“No, neither," I said.

“Death it is,” he roared.

Run Lacey, you’ve got a motorbike, for goodness’ sake.

Putting two hands on my bike, I flipped my legs to the other side and spun to see him.

He roared again, which seemed to shake the floor, or my brain as the sound boomed through my head, unbalancing me. I took a small step to regain control.

“Carter,” I whispered.

“He can’t help you. Nobody can help you Sunshine. It’s time," he growled.

Do you want to live, Lacey, because if you do, you need to fight?

Keeping my eyes locked on the giant’s clear eyes, waiting for him to make his move. He disappeared and reappeared in the quickest of time and my eyes opened wide, seeing him standing no farther than one arm’s length in front of me.

“What the fuck. Who are you?” I breathed, my voice raspy and throat as dry as the sand in the Sahara desert.

“Who are you, that is the question? Or should I say, were you?” he said and rumbled a laugh, one side of his mouth turned up.

“Did you kill my parents?”

“He only sent me for you,” he hollered.

“The Dark King?” I asked. “Did he kill my parents?”

I blinked.

“Huh…” And gagged.

His fingers masterly splayed and delved into my skin. Smothering me with his grip as his hand tightened so neatly around my throat.

He laughed. The sound was forcible and powerful. “You’ll never know or need to know.” His voice echoed around, a low vibration tranquillised the air. Or was it his grip that hadn’t tightened but still slowly ebbed at my existence?

“Clay, I need help,” I said, using the psychic powers I shared with Clay.

“Use your magic,” a voice I didn’t recognise replied. “Show me who you really are.”

I tried to scream, but his clutch around my throat constricted every movement. Not even digging my nails into the large shovel-like hands that curled expertly around my neck helped as I stared into pale blue eyes which up close had speckles of blood floating and though his eyes were light, his stare was dark as it pierced into mine. There was a potency in his eyes as they vibrated through me and at that very moment, I was sure this was black magic killing me, but I looked away because it wasn’t his potent eyes, but it was his powerful hands that slowly stole my life.

I locked my eyes and solaced myself to the light, ready to join my family.

“Lacey… Lacey… Open your eyes and fight.
